What forestry mulching is

Forestry mulching in Mayflower grinds brush and small trees and leaves the chips on the ground. The roots stay. The soil stays knit together. This page is that method. The parent page is the Mayflower forestry service category. Mulching is not a name for pulling stumps.

The right ground is undergrowth, a fence line, or small timber. The wrong ground is a slab that needs every stump pulled. The Mayflower estimate says which result you are getting. If the head cannot take a stem, that stem is called out. It is not ground anyway and left as a surprise.

One machine makes the pass. There is no haul truck in the basic method. Nothing has to leave the site. A burn pile is not part of this pass. If the owner later wants a pile burned, that choice is separate. Notices sit on the Forestry Division wildfire and burn notices. The estimate does not include a ban date.

The layer left behind is chips, not topsoil, and not a pad. A builder who needs bare soil for a foundation needs grubbing. That is a second line. It is priced on its own if the pad is next. Mulch does not become a subgrade because the crew is already there.

David walks the stems first. He marks keep trees before the carrier starts. He looks at how wet the ground is. Wet ground ruts. The visit says whether the site should wait. The crew does not start because the truck is already loaded.

The agreed area is the area that gets mulched. An extra strip is not an accident the owner discovers later. Fence and trail corridors can be opened without hauling a load of brush. Lot edges can be opened while the rest of the tract stays standing.

After the pass, the stumps are still in the ground. You can see them. A follow-up grubbing is a later line if a foundation needs them gone. Regrowth can come from those roots. A later pass is its own visit. It is not included in silence.

Density changes the day. A thicket is more work than scattered brush. Diameter changes the machine. Bigger trees may need an excavator instead of the head. The walk and the map should describe the same ground. If they do not, the number is rewritten before the crew is sent.

The phone sets the walk. It does not set the price. The weekday phone is (501) 269-6860, from 8:00 to 5:00. Or use growfullyllc@gmail.com. Say whether you need a layer left, or stumps out for a slab.

Mayflower and Conway are where this crew mulches. Both places are walked before a machine is scheduled. The map below marks that crew.

Forestry mulching on a Mayflower site

Forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees in place. Large stumps for a slab are a separate step.

Traditional clearing

Bare soil, stumps and root balls pulled - debris piled, hauled or burned.

FactorForestry mulchingTraditional clearing
ProductionOne machine, one pass. Light growth is quicker than a thicket.Slower on paper - dozer, excavator, grapple and trucks - but faster to a truly clean, buildable pad.
CostNothing is hauled, and a burn permit is not part of this pass.Trucks and disposal are part of this method.
Soil disturbanceMinimal. Roots stay in place, the ground stays knit together, and a rubber-tracked machine spreads load.High. Grubbing pulls root balls and leaves loose, open soil across the whole tract.
Erosion riskLow. The mulch mat is instant cover that slows sheet flow and holds the surface through a hard rain.Elevated until stabilized. Bare soil on a slope needs silt fence, seeding or matting right away.
DebrisNothing leaves. The chips stay on the ground.Stumps, root balls and slash get piled, then hauled, burned or ground - a real line item.
RegrowthStumps and roots live. Sprouts can come back and need a later pass.Grubbing removes the root system, so regrowth is genuinely knocked back for good.

When mulching is the wrong call

  • You are building on it. A mulch mat is organic material over live stumps. It is not a subgrade. A geotech will make you strip it anyway.
  • The timber is large. Large stems are slow to grind. Those trees come out with a machine and a grapple.
  • You need a permanent pasture or a smooth field. Stumps left in place mean you cannot run a mower or a hay implement over it.
  • The tract is a briar thicket you want gone for good. Without follow-up, cut-and-mulched invasives sprout back thicker than they started.

If your job is one of those, we will tell you on the estimate. We will quote the clearing method that actually fits.

When you need it

Undergrowth

Briars and saplings ground so you can walk and see the ground.

Small timber

Trees the mulcher head can take. Larger stems are called out.

Fence and trail corridors

A path opened without hauling a truckload of brush.

Lot edges

The building area opened while the rest of the tract stays standing.

Mulch left in place

A layer on the soil. It is not topsoil and it is not a pad.

Follow-up grubbing

Stumps removed later if a foundation needs them gone.

How the job runs

  1. 01

    Walk the stems

See what the head will grind and what needs an excavator.

Stems walked before the mulcher starts
  2. 02

    Mark keep trees

Anything that stays is marked before the carrier starts.

  3. 03

    Pick the season

Wet ground ruts. The visit says if the site should wait.

Wet ground noted before the pass
  4. 04

    Mulch the corridor

The agreed area, not an accidental extra acre.

    The agreed corridor mulched
  5. 05

    Leave the layer

Or pile it, if that was in the price.

    Chips left as a layer
  6. 06

    Check the stumps

You see what is still in the ground.

  7. 07

    Price the second step

If a pad is next, grubbing is a separate line, not a surprise.

  8. 08

    Stop at the line

The property line and the keep trees are still there.

What the walk records

The walk records density, stem size, and whether the ground should wait. A slab is a different line.

Density

A thicket takes longer than scattered brush.

Diameter

A head has a limit. Bigger trees change the machine.

Acres

The map and the walk should match.

What to have ready

Bring whatever map you have. David can judge the stems without a survey in hand.

Any survey, plat, or stake the builder already set.

Where the house, shop, drive, or road should sit.

A soils note or a civil plan, if one exists.

Where spoil can be stacked, or that it must leave.

Known utilities, wells, septic lines, and fences.

Trees or areas that must stay.

The date the next trade needs the ground.

Forestry mulching questions

Forestry mulching grinds standing brush and small trees into chips. The chips stay on the ground as a layer. One machine makes the pass. The roots stay in the ground.

No. The cutter can grind a stump flush, but the roots stay. A slab needs those roots pulled. That pull is grubbing, not another mulch pass. The estimate names which one.

Some of it can grow back. The roots are still alive. Hardwood stumps can sprout. A later pass is its own visit. It is written as a new line.

Not for the mulch pass. Nothing has to leave the site. There is no haul-off and no burn pile in that method. A pile the owner burns later is a separate choice.
